The Butterfly Project: Mariposario del Bosque Nuevo

About 8km north of the small Costa Rican town of Santa Cecilia, El Bosque Nuevo has established a unique "farm" and training area for Costa Rican villagers.  The site is about 12km south of Lake Nicaragua and about 60km east of the Pacific Coast. The Pacific slope is usually very dry, but as you approach the farm, the microclimate caused by the volcano Orosi changes everything, and the wet Atlantic climate prevails.  It is here that an incredible variety of butterflies fly through the surrounding forest.

Our butterfly project, Mariposario del Bosque Nuevo, involves teaching the residents of our farm and other participants from the outlying countryside to sustainably grow and harvest butterfly pupae for sale to conservatories around the world.

Here we provide pictures of butterflies from the Costa Rican Rainforest, information on butterflies, and a list of the butterfly pupae available.
